Newsletter Term 2, Week 5 2024
Wednesday 12 June- School Photos- Winter Uniform
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have enjoyed another Fabulous fortnight at St. Margaret Mary’s.
Presently, Simon and I are enjoying meeting the Foundation 2025 students and their parents. It’s such a highlight and a privilege for us both to chat with new and existing families. SMM is thriving!
Please find below our teaching and Learning page that celebrates and explains our extensive opportunities for all children to experience learning interventions at their point of need at SMM. Paul Smith our Teaching and Learning Diversity Leader provides information on the three tiered approach used in all schools and our specialist staff that provides student learning interventions shoulder to shoulder with our highly skilled classroom teachers.
The last fortnight was filled with enriching experiences for our students and families:
Year 3, 4, 5, and 6 students embarked on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum, enjoying a day of exploration.
Ms. Graham and Ms. Parnell led the seniors in a cross-country competition, where our students displayed remarkable passion and determination.
The Mother’s Day stall, held last Thursday, raised just over $1,000, thanks to the tremendous efforts of Larissa Cairns, her mother and their team. They crafted, grew, and sourced low-priced, high-quality gifts for mothers and significant women in our children’s lives.
Additionally, all students took part in an AUSLAN incursion last week, and Mr. Tasca will share a detailed report below.
Year 4 and 5 students attended the Emmanuel College production, enriching their cultural experiences.
The highlight of last week was the Mother’s Day breakfast, complete with a coffee van, photo opportunities, and, of course, three heartwarming songs performed by our talented student choir. It provided a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together, celebrate the women in our lives, and raise funds. The money raised will go towards purchasing oversized outdoor "quiet space" games and outdoor rugs, enhancing our school resources.
Last Tuesday, we were honored to host Bishop Ashe for morning tea with the staff, followed by his guidance and spiritual insight shared with all the Year 6 students as they prepared for the sacrament.
This week's highlight was last night's celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, officiated by Bishop Ashe and our parish priest, Fr. Binh. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Bishop Ashe, Fr. Binh, Mr. Devlin, Ms. Parnell, and Ms. Palliser for their diligent preparation of the children. May this ceremony serve as a reminder of our baptismal promises and our commitment to living lives grounded in gospel values.
Thank you to everyone for your unwavering support of our students and staff. We are truly blessed by the community in which we learn, pray, and celebrate.
Take care everyone,
Colleen McCambridge
Principal

They have State Selections next week to secure a spot at Nationals to be held in Brisbane in early November.
Very exciting times ahead for these future Olympians!
Well Done Grace

AUSLAN Incursion
Last Friday we were lucky enough to be involved in an incursion by Auslan Education Services. Naomi (a member of the deaf community), Candice (interpreter) and Mel spent time teaching us about the deaf community, teaching us new signs and also testing what we have learnt so far in our Auslan lessons this year. The students also had a chance to practice their Auslan Naomi and get tips on how to keep improving our Auslan.
"It was great to meet a deaf person and be able to sign with them" Pia
"I liked being able to ask Naomi questions and it was interesting because I have never met someone from the deaf community." - Tuppy.
"It was good to meet a person from the deaf community and I hope we can do it again!" Xavier
Melbourne Museum Excursion
Westgate Basketball Clinics
Our students were learning some great skills through the Westgate Basketball Club. Left hand, right hand, crossing over dribbling were among some of the skills we practised with Haley from Westside. The basketball training will run for the next 5 weeks during our physical education classes.
Sports Report
Cross Country
Some of our Grade 4-5 students recently competed in cross country at Yarraville Gardens, showcasing determination and sportsmanship running 2-3km. Cruz V's standout performance earned him a spot at the district level, representing our school with pride. Congratulations to Cruz and all the participants for their commendable efforts!
Lacrosse
Our class recently participated in a lacrosse introduction session led by Ciara from Newport Lacrosse. The session covered fundamental skills like stick handling, ball scooping, and cradling. Students actively participated and asked questions to grasp the techniques. It provided our students with a taste of lacrosse, which is a newly added Olympic sport!

Supporting Your Child's Learning with Multi-Tiered Support at SMM
Dear Parents,
We are thrilled to introduce you to an effective approach that enhances your child's learning journey: the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). MTSS is an inclusive framework tailored to support primary school students who may need extra assistance across academic, social and emotional, behavioural, and health and wellbeing domains.
MTSS is a structured system aimed at providing personalised support to students based on their individual learning needs. It operates like a toolbox filled with evidence-based strategies and interventions, empowering teachers to address diverse learning requirements effectively.
The key objectives of this framework include:
Identifying Learning Gaps: Through MTSS, educators can promptly identify any gaps in your child's learning journey. By pinpointing these areas early on, we can intervene swiftly and provide targeted support to ensure your child stays on track academically.
Implementing Effective Practices: MTSS emphasises the use of research-backed instructional methods tailored to meet your child's specific needs. From engaging activities to personalised exercises, we strive to deliver high-quality instruction that resonates with your child's learning style.
Monitoring Progress: With MTSS, continuous assessment and progress monitoring are integral components. By regularly evaluating your child's progress, we can gauge the effectiveness of our interventions and make necessary adjustments to optimise their learning experience.
MTSS offers a tiered approach to support, ensuring that every child receives the level of assistance they require:
Tier 1 (Universal) 100 percent (all): All students benefit from high-quality classroom instruction that aligns with the curriculum.
Features Include:
High-quality classroom instruction is provided to all students.
Instruction is aligned with the curriculum standards.
All students have access to the same level of instruction.
Universal strategies are implemented to meet the diverse needs of students.
Tier 1 interventions are preventive and proactive, targeting the entire student population.
Classroom environments are designed to support the learning of all students.
Tier 2 (Targeted) 5 – 15%(Some): Students who need additional support participate in small group sessions, within the classroom tailored to address specific learning challenges.
Features Include:
Small group sessions are conducted within the classroom setting.
These sessions target students who require additional support beyond Tier 1 instruction.
Instruction is tailored to address specific learning challenges identified for each student.
Tier 2 interventions are provided to a targeted group of students based on their needs.
Sessions are focused on remediation or reinforcement of essential skills.
Progress is monitored closely to assess the effectiveness of interventions and adjusted as needed.
Medical management and safety plans implemented.
Tier 3 (Intensive) 5% (few): For students requiring intensive intervention, personalised assistance is provided to address their unique learning needs comprehensively.
Features Include:
Tier 3 interventions are designed for students who require intensive support beyond Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions.
Personalised assistance is provided to address the unique learning needs of each student comprehensively.
Interventions are highly individualised and may include specialised instruction, accommodations, or modifications.
Progress is closely monitored, and interventions are adjusted as needed to ensure effectiveness.
Tier 3 interventions may involve collaboration with specialised professionals, such as special education teachers or therapists.
The focus is on addressing the root causes of learning difficulties and providing intensive support to promote academic success.
Medical management and safety plans implemented.
Our Classroom Teaching Supports Structure Includes:
As valued partners in your child's education, your involvement is vital to the success of MTSS. By reinforcing classroom strategies at home and engaging in open communication with teachers, you can actively support your child's learning journey and foster a collaborative learning environment.
MTSS serves as a powerful tool for nurturing your child's academic growth and ensuring their success in primary school and beyond. By leveraging evidence-based practices and fostering strong partnerships between educators and parents, we are committed to providing a supportive learning environment where every child can thrive.

Student Wellbeing & Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) at SMM
Routine, routine, routine!
Routines are very important in supporting Student Mental Health and Wellbeing because they:
● Provide safety and security
● Help us cope with change
● Help children develop a sense of mastery over their lives
● Help children tackle newer and bigger (age appropriate) challenges
● Provide the developmental role of teaching children how to constructively regulate themselves and their environment
The Importance of Routines at SMM
At SMM, our staff engage in ongoing professional development based on the latest neuroscience research. This helps us implement effective behavioral and academic strategies that enhance student engagement. Currently, we emphasise the importance of routines as they are fundamental to student mental health and well-being.
Establishing and maintaining routines, both in school and at home, creates a stable and supportive environment. When students know what to expect, they feel more confident and can focus better on their learning tasks. Our 'ready to learn' routine, consistent timetables, and designated times for various subjects help students feel grounded and empowered.
Routines promote positive habits and teach valuable life skills such as time management, organization, and self-regulation. At SMM, learning is balanced with play and brain breaks, allowing students to process information and stay refreshed.
At home, consistent bedtime and morning routines ensure children get adequate rest, starting their day refreshed and ready to learn. Scheduled times for meals, homework, and activities create stability and rhythm. These routines also facilitate quality family time, strengthening parent-child relationships and providing a sense of belonging.
How Parents Can Support Routines
As parents and caregivers, you play a crucial role in supporting your child's routines and promoting their mental health and well-being. Here are some ways you can help:
1. Encourage Consistency and Predictability: Establish clear routines for daily activities such as waking up, meals, homework, reading, and bedtime. Consistency helps children feel more secure and know what to expect.
2. Involve Your Child in Planning: Use visual aids like checklists or timetables on the fridge to involve your child in the planning process. This helps them understand and take ownership of their routines. Make sure to communicate any changes in the routine to keep your child informed.
3. Model and Discuss Routines: Children learn by watching adults. Show your child how routines help you stay organized, healthy, and meet your responsibilities. Discussing these benefits reinforces the importance of routines.
By partnering with us to establish and maintain routines both at school and at home, we can create a supportive and nurturing environment where every child can thrive. Our staff greatly appreciate your ongoing partnership in supporting the mental health and well-being of our students.

Footy Tipping
Well there has been a few shifts on the tipping ladder. Devdoggies is hanging on by a thread and after last night’s smashing of Geelong, Reed St has made a big leap into 3rd place. Rets Go Bombers is equal third but due to the monsterous defeat of the Cats, margins have sky rocketed. There are quite a few games to decide this week. Sydney v Carlton is anyone guess and do the Doggies get another chance? See you next time!
We are still looking for a few more donations so if you know of any businesses that are able to help out please ask them or contact Simon at sdevlin@smmspotswood.catholic.edu.au
We have 36 members this year which is amazing. Please remember to pay your $25 entry fee and stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks.
